TN-081 – Entry Level Underground Distribution Engineer
Job Description:
TOR Engineering is looking for an Electrical Underground (UG) Engineer to provide engineering services in support of design and project management services related to underground distribution projects for both utility and commercial clients. The underground circuits involved typically vary from 12.47kV to 120V. This position is an entry level position open to new engineering graduates and soon to be graduates. Mechanical Engineers are encouraged to apply. Mentorship and training will be provided as this is an entry level position.
The ideal individual should have an eye for detail, have a good work ethic and be a team player. A mind for electrical connectivity and “outside the box” thinking is a plus. Familiarity with right-of-way, public utility easements, and parcels/lot lines is a plus. Creativity is a must.
Field visits for verifying existing site conditions will be required, therefore, candidate is expected to be based in Phoenix, Arizona to facilitate this activity. Company vehicles for such activities to be available.
Responsibilities Include:
- Coordinate the design of the Survey or Civil Engineering package with TOR subconsultants which includes topography, survey, etc. Engineer to work with Designers to create project basefile when Survey is not available.
- Develop the underground plan view to includes the topography, right of way, easements, existing equipment locations, others utilities (water, sewer, telco, etc), etc.
- Develop equipment details that includes conduit sizes/quantities, electrical connection points, orientation of conduit sweeps into equipment, pad locational information, bill of material, etc.
- Perform various system analyses and studies including cable pull tension, secondary wire and transformer sizing for service applications, and project overall cost and traffic control mitigation.
- Develop detailed bill of material for the underground line documenting all major and minor items.
- Perform site visits, take notes and measurements of field conditions.
- Communicate with customers and attend meetings for design reviews and updates on the project.
- Compose equipment and construction specifications.
- Design of projects which adhere to National Electric Safety Code and meet the standards of client and TOR.
- Support the oversight, mentorship, and training for junior Design & Drafting staff.
General Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical) from an accredited university.
- Must be self-motivated and able to communicate and work well within a design team to ensure successful design of the entire project.
- Knowledge of computer aided drafting (CAD) software is a preferred, but not required.
- Selected interviewees will be asked to bring examples/pictures/explanations of their prior experiences/projects/hobbies/jobs showing mechanical inclinations and may be asked to take a short test to measure these abilities.
