Community Service Officer
Community Service Officers (CSOs) are civilian uniformed employees of the UWM Police Department. CSOs assist the Police Department in performing non-emergency duties and providing services that enhance community relations and operational efficiency. CSOs will perform uniform foot patrol of the UWM campus and buildings to ensure the safety and security of the community.
Essential Functions of the Job
- Respond to non-emergency calls for service such as traffic control, lost and found property, and minor incidents
- Uniform foot patrol of the UWM campus and buildings
- Motor vehicle assistance to include lockouts and jump-starts
- Provide customer service at public counter or over telephone
- Support special events and community engagement programs
- Serve as a liaison between the Police Department and community
- Assist officers with administrative and support tasks
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled UWM student
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Criminal Justice and related majors preferred
- Previous experience in public service, security, customer service or related field preferred
- Be of good character; and be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect the performance of the duties of a community service officer.
- Have no unpardoned convictions for a felony, or any offense that could be punished as a felony in Wisconsin
- Ability to follow directions and work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
- Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
- Possess a valid Wisconsin Driver’s license or other such valid operator’s permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in Wisconsin
- Basic computer proficiency
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods
- Ability to lift, carry, and move objects up to approximately 25-50 pounds
- Ability to bend, stoop, reach and perform repetitive motions
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely
- Sufficient vison (with or without correction) to read documents, operate equipment, and observe surroundings
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, via radio, and by phone
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and at varying times of the day
Working Conditions & Environmental Factors
- Work performed both indoors (office, station environment) and outdoors (streets, public spaces)
- Exposure to varying weather conditions and environmental elements
- May include evening, weekend, holiday and shift work
- Possible exposure to stressful or confrontational situations
- Regular interaction with the public
- Work may involve exposure to traffic hazards, noise, and other public safety risks
- Use of department equipment such as radios, computers, vehicles, and pepper spray.
Hours/Scheduling
- Approximate hours per week: 5-25
- Part-Time, Temporary
- CSO shifts predominantly Monday – Saturday, 7:00 pm to Midnight year-round, with daytime shifts available Monday – Thursday while school is in session.
