City of Milwaukee- Water Quality Intern

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The City of Milwaukee, Department of Public Works, Milwaukee Water Works, Water Quality, is the section that performs the monitoring and testing of all drinking water produced from the Utility's two water treatment plants.

This position will have the ability to learn about drinking water testing, drinking water treatment regulations, and how work is performed in a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources certified laboratory.  This position will be taught how to perform a variety of chemical analyses that are used to guarantee the water provided to the Milwaukee Water Works 867,000 customers is safe.

Essential Functions:

- Perform tests to verify on-line water treatment instrumentation performance.

- Create chemical standards used to perform calibrations on analytical instrumentation.

- Conduct safe water testing by measuring for the presence of Coliforms and E.coli.

Other required qualifications or information on this position:

his individual will be working in a laboratory environment and must be able to adhere to standard operating procedures and have knowledge of good laboratory hygiene. Laboratories can have a variety of hazards related to the chemicals that are required to be used. These chemicals will be strong acids and bases, solvents, strong oxidizers and others. This individual must be able to handle these chemicals according to operating procedures, safety data sheet information, and with the guidance of more experienced laboratory staff. The individual in this position must be able to wear personal protective equipment. This includes eye protection, face protection, lab coats or apron, closed toed shoes.
