Adaptive Community Approach Program - Community Guide Assistant

 The Community Guide Assistant supports and assists Community Guides, who lead program delivery to members at ACAP.   

Duties and responsibilities include the following: 

Assist Community Guides in the delivery of programs and program objectives. 

Support ACAP members while participating in activities as required, with emphasis on enabling members to participate as independently as possible. 

Assist members with personal care needs, including washroom, meals, etc. 

Maintain clear communication with coworkers and ED relative to member needs, scheduling, and any other issues that might come up. 

Engage as a peer with members, drawing members out and promoting conversation. 

Conduct consumer meetings as assigned and submit written reports to ACAP, consumer, and to contracted service representative. 

Support and/or participate in ACAP fundraising events to the best of your ability. 

Other duties as assigned. 

Special requirements: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, or ability needed. 

Education and/or Experience: 

Preferred: 

Bachelor’s Degree (BA) in Therapeutic Recreation, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Art Therapy, or a related field; or 2-3 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience with people with disabilities 

Experience with Microsoft Office products 

Minimal: 

Work history demonstrating responsibility, integrity, and respect for others

Physical demands: 

Regularly required to talk and hear 

Required to be able to taste and smell 

Required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms 

Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl 

Frequent lifting and moving of items up to 25 pounds  

Occasional lifting and moving of more than 100 pounds (when assisting members in the restroom and in wheelchairs)

ACAP’s mission is to build community. An intern with ACAP will likely be out in the community frequently, assisting our membership in making community connections while enjoying what the community has to offer and giving back to the community.

We are very hands-on at ACAP and find that human-to-human engagement serves our members more than tech savviness. We do, of course, use technology, but our emphasis is on being in relation with other human beings.
