Position Title: Security Officer 2 (Student SAFE Walker)
Associated Work Unit: S.A.F.E. Program (Safety Awareness for Everyone) UWM Police
Position Summary: SAFE walkers are civilian uniformed employees of the UWM Police Department. SAFE walkers provide escorts to members of the campus community who request them. When not providing escorts, SAFE officers perform visible patrol on campus and the near campus neighborhood. Many students have performed this job and found it highly rewarding, fun and interesting. Many students have used the SAFE program as a launching point towards a career in a Criminal Justice occupation. If this interests you, we would be delighted to add you to our team!
Qualifications: Reliable and highly motivated individuals who are willing to work evening and weekend hours. Interest in the Criminal Justice Field is a plus but not necessary. Must be able to communicate effectively with others and be of good character. Must be willing to learn basic first aid and self-defense skills. Willingness to work outdoors, perform foot patrol/escorts and use a police radio to communicate with the UWM police dispatcher.
Essential Duties: Uniformed foot patrol and walking escorts. Availability to work S.A.F.E. program hours of 6:00PM – 2:00AM Sunday through through Saturday. Exceptions will be on legal holidays, in the event of inclement weather, or if adjustments need to be made for operational needs.
Additional Duties: SAFE officers also participate in safety events sponsored by the UWM Police to promote campus safety. SAFE employees who demonstrate the aptitude for additional responsibility may also be used at fixed security posts at off-campus locations or be trained in UWM Police dispatch duties.
SAFE/Crosswalk Detail: Hours: Monday-Friday Between 9a-3p
Saturday & Sunday Mornings 6:30a-9:30a
Physical Requirements: Must be able to commute and stand/sit for long periods of time.
Special Conditions: Must be willing to work in all types of weather conditions.
