Peer Mentor- Fall 2019

Position begins mid-August 2019

Peer Mentors provide first-year students with the support they need to succeed. Every first-year student is assigned a Peer Mentor who works to support them. They work to further develop a student’s skills in order to promote their success at UWM. Peer Mentors help guide students towards resources on campus that fit their needs, walk them through their experiences, and form meaningful relationships. Mentors specifically address academic, social, extracurricular, and professional topics with their students. Mentors complete their work by communicating with students, meeting with them in person, and through work in some first-year courses.

  • Provide first-year students with the support they need to succeed
  • Develop skills related to academic and personal success
  • Listen to students’ problems
  • Lead students to helpful resources on campus Cover many areas of life: academic, social, extracurricular, and professional
  • Communicate with students monthly
  • Meet with students on as needs basis
  • Support students in first-year courses

Peer Mentors are paid $9/hour and work mid-August until late-May. Most Peer Mentors work 10-15 hours per week and do not work when class is not in session. New Peer Mentors go through 40-hours of paid training that prepares them to meet the needs of our diverse campus.
