UNION Sociocultural Program Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is designed to train and help prepare the employee for a professional career in the college union / student activities field. The employee will plan and implement a wide range of programs and activities designed to promote cultural awareness and understanding. NOTE: Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory evaluation at the end of every semester.
Hours: 20 hours/week
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Interest in and knowledge of diverse identities, social justice and urban issues, including but not limited to topics of: race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, spirituality, cognitive and physical ability and socioeconomic status.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal communication skills (written and verbal).
  •  Must be personable, responsible, organized, creative and attentive to details.
  •  Must be able to multitask, prioritize, manage time and work under pressure.
  • Working knowledge of or willingness to learn and use student development theories in activity planning, implementation and evaluation.
  •  Working knowledge of UWM Union operations and programming is desired. Prior experience with event planning is preferred.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Assist the Sociocultural Program Coordinator in ensuring that the department plans a calendar of events each semester that reflects the diverse needs of students at UWM and encompasses a wide variety of topics and formats.
  • Play a key role in the development of events, including brainstorming, research, planning, marketing, implementation and evaluation.
  • Develop partnerships with other campus departments and student organizations for collaborative programming opportunities.
  • Assist in the development of comprehensive marketing plans for events, including print and electronic strategies such as, but not limited to: Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and the Sociocultural website.
  •  Staff events during general and special hours.
  • Maintain general Sociocultural phone line, e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and other social media.
  •  Represent the Sociocultural Programming department positively and professionally at all times.
  • Maintain organized records.
  •  Actively participate in weekly meetings with the Sociocultural Program Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including data entry, flyer distribution, etc.
 
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
  • May function as primary contact person the day/night of events.
  • Participate in Union Trainings, and other staff development programs and activities.
  • Assist Union Programming Staff with all-staff events and any special events needing extra assistance when necessary.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to communicate in person, via telephone and via e-mail; must possess a high degree of manual dexterity. Reasonably good vision and hearing; exceptional oral communication skills; must be mobile and able to function in a fast-paced environment.
 
Special conditions: Must be willing to work evening events and occasional weekends. Must be able to commit to position for at least two semesters.
