Community Engagement Intern

Mission of the Center

The Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research (CCBLLR) partners with the community to inspire students, faculty, and staff to engage in activities that foster enduring personal and social change.

Position Purpose

The purpose of the Community Engagement Intern position is to support students, faculty and staff engaged in the CCBLLR programs as part of its work to help the campus fulfill its civic mission. CCBLLR Interns will support the work of the department by assisting at events, promoting the office programs in public and in the classroom, manage student led programs and the students involved in them, and offering general office assistance and maintenance through excellent customer service and ensuring a pleasant and clean environment.

***Applicants must be available to work 3 to 4 shifts totaling at least 15 hours during time frames below***
Tuesday 7am to 12pm, 4:30pm-7pm
Wednesday 7am-7:30pm
Thursday 7am-7:30pm

Position Duties

1.    Recruit and coordinate volunteers for CCBLLR Programs and events.
a.    Represent the office through tabling and material distribution.
b.    Post items to social media when you attend events and tag participants.
c.    Complete three class raps or student organization presentations each semester.
d.    Update volunteer chalk board, stock brochures, and flyer announcements as needed.

2.    Assist professional staff and students with service-learning programs, presentations, and materials.
a.    Help create and distribute service-learning materials such as time sheets, forms, and other documents.
b.    Assist with service-learning class presentations.

3.    Assist at large scale episodic events and information sessions.
a.    Attend Make a Difference Days and other episodic events.
b.    Attend information sessions for the College Bigs and Youth Mentors Program, Alternative Spring Break, the Panther Response Team, and others as needed.
c.    Work on at least one Saturday each month for Business 100 or other events.

4.    Deliver top-notch customer service to students.
a.    Provide friendly service and referrals to those that visit the CCBLLR office.
b.    Do “Day Before” volunteer reminders.
c.    Provide proper materials (timecards, MOUs, registration forms, etc) to students who come in from the CLIP Program, service learning, SSR, or other programs.

5.    SSR Program: Promote, manage, and maintain the SSR Program. 
a.    Serve as the initial contact for any student interested in the program and as the contact person for all current program participants.
b.    Meet with each student in the program and maintaining communication with both students in the programs and the supervisors at the non-profit agencies. 
c.    Train students on the program and its procedures, specifically how to log hours on paper and electronically.
d.    Create, update, and make copies of all program materials as needed.
e.    Communicate with local non-profit professionals at begin and end of the semester (usually volunteer service directors) who represent their agencies and work with the students to verify and complete volunteer hours.
f.     Update the SSR program’s participant spreadsheet as new participants. join/leave the program, and as participant paperwork is turned in.

6.    Van transportation and Van Chats
a.    Drive students as needed in the CCBLLR van to volunteer sites.
b.    Deliver van chat reflection during driving shifts.
c.    Make sure van is clean, gassed up, and parked properly.
d.    Be available to drive on Saturdays as needed.

7.    Overall office support and training
a.    Attend beginning of the semester staff retreats and monthly staff meetings.
b.    Check mail, voice mail, and make deliveries as needed.
c.    Maintain databases, including daily purges, and walk-in clip board additions.
d.    Swipe IDs of all visitors to the office.
e.    Vacuum, make coffee, and wipe down microwave, fridge, conference table, coffee table, and front desk each morning.

8.    All other duties as assigned that aid professional staff with programs such as CBYM, CLIP, OAP, PRT, and other task that will lead to the success of the department.


Qualifications

1.    UWM student in good standing with the campus.
2.    A valid driver's license and clean driving record for at least 2 years.
3.    Good customer service skills and experience working with people.
4.    Knowledge of UWM’s co-curricular activities and an interest or knowledge of Milwaukee’s non-profit community.
5.    Experience with typing, phone usage, and clerical work and a willingness to learn new database systems.
6.    A personal commitment to service and leadership.
