UNION - Student Assistant, UWM Food Center & Pantry

POSITION DESCRIPTION 
UWM Food Center & Pantry – Student Assistant 
 
Department:  Student Involvement 
Location: Union WG10 & Union 348 
Hours: 10 hours per week during the academic year; 5 hours per week during winter break and the summer 
Salary:  $8.50/hour  
 
ABOUT THE UWM FOOD CENTER & PANTRY: 
The UWM Food Center & Pantry (FCP) is an open shopping resource for students, faculty, and staff experiencing food insecurity. We provide non-perishable foods, hygiene products, and other basic needs items for free. Patrons are not required to show proof of need, and their identity is kept confidential. At this time, the UWM FCP is completely supported by donations. For the Spring 2020 semester, the open hours are Mondays from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and Thursdays 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. 
 
PURPOSE OF POSITION: 
This position is trained in all basic functions within the UWM Food Center and Pantry and will be supervised by the Assistant Director of Student Association Professional Staff. Primary responsibilities focus on collection of food from donation bins across campus and staffing the Food Center and Pantry during open hours. This includes, but is not limited to: 
  • Opening and closing responsibilities on Monday evenings and Thursday mornings & evenings 
  • Ensure all open hours are staffed, either by themselves or volunteers 
  • Clean the pantry spaces regularly and recycle cardboard boxes 
  • Inventory donations weekly and check products for expiration or other food safety issues 
  • Input data from patron usage while maintaining confidentiality 
  • Coordinate, attend, and take minutes at monthly Executive Team meetings 
  • Order nutritious, in-demand food to supplement donations 
  • Collect donations from permanent bins across campus 
  • Develop and keep current a volunteer manual detailing processes in the UWM Food Center & Pantry 
  • Attend UWM Union Student Lead Trainings monthly 
  • Additional support and projects as needed 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 
Must be a currently enrolled UW-Milwaukee student with a 2.5 GPA or higher. Candidates must demonstrate a high level of responsibility, the ability to work independently, an appreciation for confidentiality and security of sensitive information and a strong commitment to diversity and customer service. 
 
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 
  • Knowledge of and/or willingness to learn the operations and services of the UWM Food Center & Pantry 
  • Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook 365, including Sharepoint 
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative with minimal supervision and communicate in a clear, courteous, and professional manner 
 
DESIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 
  • Knowledge of food insecurity, hunger, non-profit leadership, volunteer coordination, or management 
  • Experience working in an office and/or retail setting 
  • Experience working with databases and general record-keeping (inventorying experience is a plus!) 
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Willingness to learn SignUpGenius and WhenToWork software 
  • Experience creating policies and processes 
  • Strong customer service abilities 
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 
Ability to communicate in person, via telephone and via e-mail. Reasonably good vision and hearing; exceptional oral communication skills; must be mobile and able to function in a fast paced environment. Will need to lift up to 20 pounds regularly and utilize a cart to transport items across campus.
