TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Graduate Retention Assistant (Graduate Student Position)

OVERVIEW
This position’s purpose is to help increase the numbers of sophomore, junior and senior SSS Scholars to advance to graduate with bachelor’s degrees within six years. The outreach will be COVID-19 remote using online resources for communication, check-ins, academic resource utilization, and progression tracking to positively influence readiness for college graduation.

JOB SUMMARY:
Assists in SSS efforts to retain upper-class level undergraduates who participated in UWM TRIO SSS. This includes performing retention check-ins, promoting and supporting financial literacy, social emotional learning, and college/career development tools to help achieve the project retention goals. • Persistence: greater than 76% of all participants served by the SSS Program will persist from one academic year to the beginning of the next academic year or will have earned a bachelor’s degree at the grantee institution during the academic year.
• Good Academic Standing: greater than 70% of all enrolled participants served by the SSS project will meet the performance level required to stay in good academic standing.
• Graduation: greater than 22% of new participants served each year will graduate with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent within six (6) years.

In support attainment of these goals, the position responsibilities include:
• Confer with SSS success coaches to help monitor students’ progress

o Contact continuing participants reminding them of the available SSS activities and services supporting college persistence and success.

o Introduce, explain and influence students to access and use newly acquired online skills assessment and development tools on their own with the understanding you will do a progress check-in within 10 working days of initial contact.

o At least once a semester document nudging, usage and debriefing activities utilizing sponsored online tools:
→ Conover Online™ pre-assessment and assessing, teaching, applying and developing personal skills for college and career successes, enhancing personal responsibility, achieving academic goals, and postgraduate readiness (primary)

→ Track and follow-up SSS Scholars to apply for graduation and on-track progression: confer with SSS coaches as needed to address potential obstacles

→ Money Path ™ financial literacy program (secondary)

• Maintain spreadsheet tracking student outreach and follow-up documenting contacts, SSS sponsored programs usage(s), referrals and participation in UWM’s high-impact activities and events via emails, chats, texting, telephone, and when allowed in-person.

• Assist in the updating, implementing and reporting of online assessment tool utilizing a Logic Model to evaluate participants’ engagement in the self-exploration and planning process and the impact the outreach had on students’ major selection, goals and progression.

• Participate in pre- and in-service training.

• Assist with other office administrative tasks as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Demonstrated experiences working independently and as a team member; self-motivation and initiative to carry through on projects with minimal supervision.

• Ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively.

• Strong customer service skills and ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds.

• Attention to details, accuracy, organization and planning.

• Applied experience using social media, word processing, spreadsheet and database programs (prior experience using Canvas, Navigate, TEAMS, ZOOM, PAWS, Handshake, career assessment, and/or other student development tools would be extremely helpful).

• Write, submit and present formative and summative reports reflecting retention outreach efforts impact on student progression, academic standing, and graduation applications.

Candidates with prior academic support program experience with similar programs like TRIO are urged to apply. Candidate preference will be given to graduate students enrolled in, but not limited to, postsecondary administration, social work, counseling, or student development field(s).
