Wetland Anuran Field Research Technician

Position Overview:
The Cofrin Center for Biodiversity (CCB) seeks to hire 1-2 student field technicians to conduct anuran (frog/toad) and habitat surveys and assist with bird surveys for the international, Great Lakes Restoration Initiative-funded Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Monitoring Program from mid/late-March until mid-July 2021. From mid-July until August 1, 2021, technicians will assist with other CCB work, including but not limited to invasive species management, wildlife monitoring, data entry, file management, mapping, trail work, etc.
  • Location: Field work will take place in Great Lakes coastal wetlands along the northern Illinois/Wisconsin Lake Michigan shoreline to the southern shores of the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Other projects will take place on or near the UW-Green Bay campus
  • Shift: Seasonal position (full time during June, part time during other periods) though schedule will vary weekly; must have a very flexible work schedule and willing to work weekends
  • Pay Rate: $11-13/hr (based on experience)
  • Approximate Start Date: As early as March 15, 2021 for office trainings though field work may not start until mid-late March/April 2021
  • Approximate End Date: August 1, 2021 (additional funding may be available in August 2021)

  • Travel: Required (will travel 1-3 nights per trip); hotels/lodging, vehicles, and a modest food stipend (only for overnight stays) will be provided; personal mileage will be reimbursed (if applicable)
  • Time Off: May take unpaid time-off for up to 1 week after July 10, 2021 if desired

Position Description:
Primary job duties for the Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Monitoring Program (~March-July 2021) are denoted with an asterisk (*) followed by possible CCB duties (~July-August 2021):
  • Drive to and conduct anuran (frog/toad) and habitat surveys and assist with bird surveys*
  • Attend multiple required trainings*
  • Scout and establish sampling locations at coastal wetland field sites*
  • Enter anuran data and assist with file management*
  • Collect and upload geospatial data from field surveys to online database*
  • Manage and care for rental vehicles*
  • Keep track of food and gas expenses and fill out form for reimbursement*
  • Follow COVID-19 protocols (e.g., mask wearing) - required for all work
  • Assist with invasive plant control, monitoring, and mapping
  • Conduct trail work and boundary marking
  • Assist with wildlife and other biological monitoring (e.g., endangered Piping Plover, waterbirds)
  • Track hours worked and describe the work completed in an online daily log - required for all work

Required Qualifications:
  • Comfortable working long days outdoors (up to 10-13 hr) in hot or buggy conditions, traveling to remote areas, working late at night or early in the morning, and driving for long distances (up to 5 hr)
  • Ability to walk or hike long distances (1-3 miles) through sometimes difficult terrain
  • Ability to record data accurately and clearly
  • Organized and pays close attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude, even in challenging situations
  • Demonstrated ability to be a team player and work regularly with a field partner
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage time and multiple projects
  • Independent, responsible, honest, and reliable
  • Respectful and able to follow instructions given by supervisor or field crew leader
  • Must be enrolled as a student in Spring 2021 Semester -and- Summer or Fall 2021 Semester
  • Hold a valid driver’s license

Desired Qualifications:
  • Training or experience in biology, environmental science, wildlife, or a related field
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (e.g., MS Excel, MS Word, OneDrive
  • Experience entering data and proficiency with GPS technology and Google Earth
  • Experience conducting wildlife surveys
  • Knowledge of Great Lakes coastal wetland ecosystems
  • Ability to identify anurans by sound, though we are willing to train
