Communications Coordinator, LGBTQ+ Resource Center

The UWM LGBTQ+ Resource Center is looking to add someone enthusiastic about social media and document design to our part-time student staff team. New hires need to have 7-10 hours of weekly availability primarily during LGBTQ+RC office hours (Monday-Friday, 9-5). The LGBTQ+RC staff is currently working remotely, but will be returning to working on campus for the fall semester.

Overview: Our work is to maintain a welcoming, inclusive and informative environment for the campus community. As student employees you are often the first point of contact for visitors.

Communications Coordinator Duties:
  • Serve as the student staff point person for marketing, publicity, and the development of visually appealing content to raise visibility and awareness of the LGBTQ+RC and LGBTQ+RC services.
  • Design and draft publicity for LGBTQ+RC sponsored and co-sponsored events, programs, and activities.
  • Design publicity pieces that adhere to all UWM Branding standards/expectations/University Relations/Print & Copy Services logo requirements (http://www4.uwm.edu/branding/).
  • Work with event/program/activity co-sponsors and Union Marketing in coordinating publicity materials requirements (needs for design, banner space, etc.)
  • Maintain and update the LGBTQ+RC’s presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • Respond to messages received via the LGBTQ+RC's social media accounts or forward them to the appropriate staff member.
  • Create polished social media posts using educational content prepared by the rest of the LGBTQ+RC team.
  • Assist professional staff team in recording analytic data on the LGBTQ+RC's social media presence.

Professionalism Expectations of All LGBTQ+RC Student Staff Positions:
  • Be a role model & leader in creating a welcoming environment for all visitors of the LGBTQ+RC.
  • Address Common Space Agreement concerns within the LGBTQ+RC.
  • Develop and become familiar with an “elevator speech” about the LGBTQ+ Resource Center.
  • Be aware & knowledgeable of current & upcoming programs/events.
  • Act on behalf or and/or serve in an official capacity for the LGBTQ+RC at events/programs.
  • Ask clarifying and follow-up questions and/or help as needed.
  • Substantiate the completion of tasks: follow up with professional staff & relevant student staff.
  • Provide thorough consistency service to all visitors & staff of the LGBTQ+ Resource Center.
  • Be willing & capable of providing appreciation & constructive feedback for peers, professional staff, programs & activities.
  • If someone is looking for a referral or advice do your best to help them out but remember that we are not trained counselors so be judicious with the information you volunteer. If you cannot find the information needed always urge the visitor/caller to contact us again and acquire contact information so that the professional staff can follow-up.

What we are looking for in an application: Please submit a cover letter, resume, and your fall 2021 availability. Don't overlook the cover letter. Because this is a student position, we are looking more for growth potential than established job experience. Therefore, a cover letter can often tell us more about you than a resume. Let us know why you want to work with us or how our center's mission fits into your desired career path. For resumes, we won't overlook job experience; however, we welcome students who may not have professional experience yet. Don't be afraid to make your skills and relevant coursework the focus of your resume. Relevant unpaid work, academic work, or even hobbies can often be just as valuable to list on a resume as job experience.
