Peer Outreach Coordinator, LGBTQ+ Resource Center

The UWM LGBTQ+ Resource Center is looking to students who are interested in making UWM's campus a more welcoming space for all to our staff team. New hires need to have 7-10 hours of weekly availability primarily during LGBTQ+RC office hours (Monday-Friday, 9-5). The LGBTQ+RC staff is currently working remotely, but will be returning to working on campus for the fall semester.

Overview: Our work is to maintain a welcoming, inclusive and informative environment for the campus community. As student employees you are often the first point of contact for visitors.

Professionalism Expectations of All LGBTQ+RC Student Staff Positions:
  • Be a role model & leader in creating a welcoming environment for all visitors of the LGBTQ+RC.
  • Address Common Space Agreement concerns within the LGBTQ+RC.
  • Develop and become familiar with an “elevator speech” about the LGBTQ+ Resource Center.
  • Be aware & knowledgeable of current & upcoming programs/events.
  • Act on behalf or and/or serve in an official capacity for the LGBTQ+RC at events/programs.
  • Ask clarifying and follow-up questions and/or help as needed.
  • Substantiate the completion of tasks: follow up with professional staff & relevant student staff.
  • Provide thorough consistency service to all visitors & staff of the LGBTQ+ Resource Center.
  • Be willing & capable of providing appreciation & constructive feedback for peers, professional staff, programs & activities.
  • If someone is looking for a referral or advice do your best to help them out but remember that we are not trained counselors so be judicious with the information you volunteer. If you cannot find the information needed always urge the visitor/caller to contact us again and acquire contact information so that the professional staff can follow-up.

Position-Specific Duties: Upon hiring, we will collaboratively work with you to create a focus-area based on your current skills and desired career path. Possible examples include focuses on developing educational content, event planning/execution, office management, assessment/data collection, etc.

What we are looking for in an application: Please submit a cover letter, resume, and your fall 2021 availability. Don't overlook the cover letter. Because this is a student position, we are looking more for growth potential than established job experience. Therefore, a cover letter can often tell us more about you than a resume. Let us know why you want to work with us or how our center's mission fits into your desired career path. For resumes, we won't overlook job experience; however, we welcome students who may not have professional experience yet. Don't be afraid to make your skills and relevant coursework the focus of your resume. Relevant unpaid work, academic work, or even hobbies can often be just as valuable to list on a resume as job experience.
