Building Manager - Student Union

Student Building Manager- Position Description 

Student Building Managers are the first point of contact for day-to-day happenings throughout the UWM Student Union. Building Managers are first and foremost responsible for the safety and security of everyone within the Student Union. They are stationed at and work together with the information center staff and must be prepared to handle any situation that may arise.  

Starting hourly rate: $13.50

Duties include but are not limited to: 

  • Administrator on duty. When no full-time professional staff members are present Building Managers have administrative authority.
  • Frequently walking through the Student Union on building tours and using the security cameras to ensure nothing is out of the ordinary.
  • Morning Shift must turn on all the lights, unlock exterior doors, and communicate with the Overnight Staff if there were any issues during the night.
  • Evening Shift should notify patrons that the building is closing each evening and ensure that they leave the building, lock all bathrooms once they have been cleared out, turn off lights and lock and latch exterior doors.
  • Provide helpful customer service to patrons who approach the information center. This can include but is not limited to giving directions, office locations and hours, general questions about campus and events.
  • Must be familiar with Fire Emergency Response. Able to remain calm and understand how to respond during and after a fire alarm. Must be able to learn about and manage the Fire Panel.
  • Must be comfortable working closely with UWM Police Department for any situation that may require their assistance.
  • Responsible for the trouble shooting and repair of the cash recycler machine related to any cash services within the Student Union.
  • Respond to radio calls and give assistance when needed; such as unlocking a secure room, providing event assistance, removing disruptive patrons, etc.
  • Removing unauthorized signage, solicitors, or other disruptive patrons from the building.
  • Be able to respond to, confront, and submit Incident Reports for a variety of incidents from facilities concerns to unruly patrons and medical emergencies.
  • Utilize Office 365 (Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.) to log key documentation, validate student staff parking, and log lost and found items.
  • Use EMS software to reserve a room for student clubs or organizations.
  • Grant ID access to Union full-time and student employees within the Andover software.
  • At the conclusion of each shift, send a shift report email summarizing the shift and any issues that should be shared.
  • Communicate with all departments throughout the Union.

Dress code includes wearing a name badge, the Student Union polo or t-shirt, business casual pants/jeans and close-toed shoes.  

Must work at least three shifts (between 5.5 and 6.5 hours each) per week and be available on weekends and able to work over break periods.
